Which Floor Should You Live On in Paris? The Secret Hierarchy of Haussmann Apartments

25 JUNE 2026

There is no perfect apartment, only different compromises. Each floor of a traditional Paris Haussmann building has its own personality profile.

Ground floor (rez-de-chaussée)

  • Easy access
  • Often larger
  • Less expensive

But …

  • Less privacy
  • Darker
  • Security considerations

First floor (premier étage)

  • Historically the “noble floor” in some grand buildings because visitors didn’t have to climb far

But …

  • Today often noisier because of cafés, shops, deliveries, and resident traffic

Second and third floors

  • Good compromise
  • Reasonable climb
  • Better light
  • Less street noise

Fourth and fifth floors

  • Often considered the sweet spot
  • Better views
  • More sunlight
  • Less noise
  • High enough to catch breezes

But …

  • More expensive

Top floor

  • Romantic
  • Rooftop views
  • Skylights
  • Quiet from neighbours above
  • Incredible photographs

But…

  • Hot in summer
  • Cold in winter
  • Tiny rooms (former chambres de bonne)
  • Many stairs if the building has no lift

Living in Paris teaches you that an apartment isn’t simply an address. It’s an entire way of experiencing the city. The floor you choose shapes the sounds you hear, the light that fills your mornings, the summer heat you endure, the conversations you overhear, and even how often you stop to admire the rooftops.
